Mid-shot: Main focus of someone about to enter the room.

Long shot: Focus on who is entering

Over-the-shoulder: The expressions made between the two people, allowing the audience to read the moods and the impact of someone's presence.

High angle: Captures the scene of assistance

Close-up: Able to read the facial expressions, she is pleased with the presence and assistance she has gotten.

Reflection: I have learned that shot choice significantly affects meaning by guiding the viewer's focus and conveying emotion. For instance, a close-up shot captures the positive emotion and detail in the context, allowing the viewer to focus on something specific. I'll be moving forward with intentional shot selection in my main project to visually express tone and relationships to tell the story without relying much on dialogue.

 Media Skills Audit

    Two key strengths I've noticed are my confidence in technical production skills, such as using a camera for framing and focus, editing software, and importing/exporting media files, and my ability to analyze how camera shots and angles create meaning.

 These skills help me with production work and the understanding of how visual choices impact storytelling. However, I have also noticed areas that need improvement, such as developing a deeper understanding of how to use editing techniques to create meaning. These include manipulating pace, rhythm, or transitions to enhance emotional or narrative impact. 

Additionally, I need more practice and will focus more on researching and analyzing case studies of media texts, which will help me better my knowledge and support more critical thinking in my creative decisions.

    At this moment, I feel most confident in labeling certain parts of the media context and using technical production skills like camera operation, lighting, and editing software. Yet, I need more practice with researching and analyzing case studies of media texts to further expand my understanding. This semester, I'd like to focus on improving my editing techniques to create stronger meaning and impact in my work.

First Blog #1

 Jasmin Cueto in the 11th grade and loves to practice different daily routines to try out different lifestyles. Routines such as 5 am productivity or the 25 time management trick are all types of routines that I like to try out to figure out what lifestyle is best for me. The curiosity of how media works and behind the scenes caught my attention as well as my interest in film as to why I chose Media Studies. Learning how to properly analyze has always been one of my main goals as I see that being a great skill in everyday life and for potential future careers.

 I hope to achieve confidence in analysis and understanding genres in film and how it is all put together from Media studies. Analytical and creative skills are the main goal of skills to develop as I study and learn all about media. Time management is another important skill I wish to gain from this course to better my bad habit of procrastinating.

I’m excited to learn everything this class has to offer, as well as curious about it and willing to put in all my effort to understand all the concepts. I’m also looking forward to creating my own film and truly knowing how to work with it and all the other knowledge about media.

 I consume the most media through TV shows as I like to watch different ones depending on my mood. Certain shows do change my perspective on certain things that may apply to my personality or shift it in a way. After watching a show, depending on its genre, my personality has a high chance of changing for a couple days as I have a habit of picking up what the content says or how they act. The media plays a role in interests and mood the most as it opens my eyes to things i’ve never considered before and may either make me feel better or make me feel anxious, depending on what kind of tv show i’m watching. 

Looking ahead , I think media studies will challenge me to improve my time management skills as there are many tasks to do over time and my procrastination issues can be improved with the effort of managing my time better for this class, as well as other classes. I’m most excited about learning all the concepts of media and how film works such as all the angles and things like that when it comes to analyzing, and I hope by the end of the course I can confidently understand everything and pass the exams.
